How to Calculate Stocking Rate for Pasture (Without Overgrazing)

"How many head can this pasture support?" is one of the most common questions in ranching — and one of the easiest to get wrong if you're just counting heads instead of accounting for animal size and forage demand.

Why headcount alone is misleading

A 400-lb calf and a 1,400-lb bull don't eat the same amount of forage, but a simple headcount treats them identically. If your pasture math is based purely on "how many animals" rather than "how much they actually eat," you can end up overstocked without realizing it — even if your headcount looks reasonable on paper.

The Animal Unit (AU) system

The standard fix is the Animal Unit (AU) — a reference unit representing roughly a 1,000-lb cow with a calf, consuming about 26 lbs of forage dry matter per day. Every other animal on your operation converts to a fraction or multiple of that:

  • A 1,000-lb cow ≈ 1.0 AU
  • A 1,400-lb bull ≈ roughly 1.4 AU
  • A weaned calf might be closer to 0.4–0.6 AU depending on weight

Once you convert your whole herd to AUs based on actual weight (not a flat multiplier applied to every animal regardless of size), you get a real forage demand number — not just a headcount.

Stocking rate vs. carrying capacity

These two terms get used interchangeably, but they're different:

  • Carrying capacity is what your pasture can sustainably support, based on forage production, soil, rainfall, and season
  • Stocking rate is what you're actually running on it right now, in AUs

The goal is keeping your stocking rate at or below carrying capacity — consistently exceeding it is what leads to overgrazing, degraded pasture, and lower long-term productivity.

A basic calculation

  1. Convert your herd to total AUs (sum each animal's individual AU based on its actual weight, not a flat per-head number)
  2. Estimate your pasture's forage production for the season (often expressed in AU-days or AU-months per acre, based on local extension data or your own historical grazing records)
  3. Compare your total AU demand against that capacity
  4. Adjust — through rotation, destocking, or rest periods — if demand is consistently above capacity

Where this commonly goes wrong

A flat multiplier applied to every animal regardless of species or weight (for example, treating every animal as exactly 1.25 AU) produces a number that looks precise but isn't accurate — a goat and a bull clearly don't have the same forage demand.
